Mercury in Astrology

Mercury is the most active planet of the solar system, which influence human affairs extensively, ranging from mode of communication, transportation, business, commerce, health, creativity, and intelligence.

Mercury, often referred to as the “Budha” planet, is intimately linked to “Budhi,” which symbolizes intelligence. Despite its status as the smallest planet in our solar system, Mercury is the ruler of communication, intellect, and mental competence. He signifies youthfulness, charm, having a sense for humor, and the joy of good company. He has a knack for solving puzzles and mastering mind games. He has expertise in the realm of mental agility, captivating others with his excellent communication skills and command over language. He knows precisely how to articulate thoughts and feelings, whether through expressive speech, captivating writing, or the tact of interaction. He has the insatiable quest for knowledge and passion to solve problems with a razor-sharp mind and quick-witted thinking. Nevertheless, an afflicted Mercury may present challenges in learning and decision-making, warranting thoughtful consideration. As a young child and Prince of the Solar family, he is flexible, open-minded, adaptable, versatile, and can navigate new situations and environments with ease. He has the nature of duality due to its relationship with two signs, Gemini and Virgo, or say two parents. If influenced by Gemini, he embraces curiosity, adaptability, and sociability, ever eager to explore the world around him and excessive sexual desires. In contrast, when connected with Virgo, he is virgin, caring, practical, give attention to detail, analytical, and even critical.

Mercury, being an intellectual planet, endows individuals with remarkable intelligence, analytical prowess, and a keen ability to grasp subjects swiftly. It bestows a strong retentive power and the capacity for effective reproduction of knowledge. When Mercury receives the aspect of Jupiter or Venus, it represents a refined political acumen, a sharp intellect, and a logical mind with profound learning and discernment. Those influenced by Mercury exhibit wit, sharpness, and a remarkable ability to acquire knowledge across various fields without formal instruction. Additionally, Mercury instills a sense of curiosity and a deep desire to master occult sciences. However, an afflicted Mercury can render an individual prone to restlessness and inconsistency.

Mercury governs the mentality and the way we react to our senses and impressions. It holds sway over the solar plexus and the central nervous system. However, when afflicted, Mercury can manifest negative traits in an individual. Such a person may become a compulsive gambler, a habitual liar, excessively conceited, and prone to making vain-glorious statements that extol their own virtues. An afflicted Mercurian may resort to cheating, displaying talkativeness, perversion, eccentricity, lack of principles, inconsistency, and boastfulness.

An afflicted Mercury can contribute to various health issues, including vertigo, lethargy, dizziness in the head, mental instability, brain disorders, tuberculosis, stammering, memory defects, dry coughs, excessive salivation, gout in the hands and feet, leprosy, digestive disorders, nervous system ailments, and nervous breakdowns, among others.

When Mercury is afflicted by Mars, disputes, litigation, losses through theft, risky ventures, impulsive decisions leading to public scandal and criticism, and involvement in fraud, cheating, or forgery may occur. If Saturn afflicts Mercury, the individual’s efforts may be consistently delayed, leading to disappointment and depression. Disharmony, disputes, debt, and disease may arise. Their education, memory, finances, health, and retentive power may all suffer, resulting in poor outcomes in these areas.

Mercury has been given the rulership of two zodiac signs, Gemini and Virgo. It is only planets in astrology that is exalted in its own sign. In Virgo, Mercury is exalted, with its highest point of exaltation at 15 degrees. Mercury is debilitated in Pisces, with the lowest point of debilitation at 15 degrees. The first 15 degrees of Virgo represent the exaltation portion of the sign, while the portion from 16 to 20 degrees is considered Mercury’s Mooltrikona, and the remaining degrees are its Swakshetra. Additionally, the entire sign of Gemini is also considered Mercury’s Swakshetra. Among the planets, the Sun and Venus are considered friends of Mercury, while the Moon is seen as an enemy.
