Sun in Astrology

The sun is considered the King of the Solar System, as the other planets have originated from the Sun. The sun is the largest among the planets. Just to compare with Earth, its diameter is 110 times Earth and its surface area is 1.20 lac times Earth’s surface area. The Sun is the centre of the solar system. Its mean distance from Earth is 14,96 lac kms.

The Sun is the most important planet in astrology as it is the creator of the entire Solar System. He is given the status of King or Main god in the Navagrahas in Vedic astrology. Being the centre of all life force and energy and the giver of Prana, the Sun is worshipped as the Sun God. The Sun, though stationary in its position, moves the other objects around him. The Sun never turns retrograde as everything else around the Sun moves around him. In astrological significance, the Sun takes 12 months to complete its journey and resides about a month in each astrological sign. It moves through all twelve zodiac signs each year, progressing approximately one degree a day.

Sun (Ravi, Suryadev) is a hot, dry, masculine and positive planet. He is the God of Fire and fiery. He is considered to be mild malefic due to the heat it generates. In Vedic astrology, the Sun is a significant celestial body with profound influences on an individual’s astrological chart. The Sun rules the Leo-5th sign in the zodiac, governing aspects related to self-expression, creativity, intelligence, progeny, authority, and vitality. It represents the core identity of an individual, symbolizing the soul and one’s life purpose.

Sun is exalted at 10 degrees in Aries and debilitated in Libra by 10 degrees.  Aries, where the Sun is exalted, enhances its positive qualities, promoting courage, leadership, and vitality. In Libra, where it is debilitated, there might be challenges related to self-expression and vitality. Leo, the sign ruled by the Sun, is considered its Mooltrikone sign from 11-30 degrees, reinforcing the Sun’s positive influence.

Sun is friends with Moon, Mars, and Jupiter while enemies are with Saturn and Venus. Mercury, however, behaves neutral. Leo is the basic triangle or Mooltrikona sign. It is extremely beneficial and strong for fire signs like Leo, Aries, and Sagittarius. It faces more challenges in Aquarius, Libra, and Gemini. In the remaining signs, a balance between ease and difficulty is observed.
