Shubh Muhurat 2026 – Auspicious Dates, Meaning & Rules

In Sanatan Dharma, Shubh Muhurat is the sacred time window chosen to begin important works like marriage, Griha Pravesh, business opening, vehicle purchase, Mundan, Annaprashan and major religious rituals. According to Vedic astrology, every moment carries a specific energy based on Tithi, Vaar (weekday), Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana. When these five elements of Panchang combine harmoniously, they create a Shubh Muhurat, filled with divine blessings, positive vibrations and higher chances of success.

The purpose of this Shubh Muhurat 2026 guide is to explain:

  • What is Shubh Muhurat in Hinduism
  • How muhurat is calculated using Panchang
  • Which muhurats are generally auspicious or inauspicious
  • Key points to keep in mind before finalising an auspicious time in 2026

For exact personalised muhurat, your individual horoscope must also be checked.

What Is Shubh Muhurat?

Shubh Muhurat literally means auspicious time. It is a carefully selected time period during which the positions of planets, Nakshatras, Tithis and Yogas are favourable for starting a specific type of work.

According to Vedic astrology:

  • Time is not uniform; different periods carry different qualities of energy.
  • When the cosmic arrangement is supportive, activities started in that time tend to bring better results, stability and fewer obstacles.
  • When time is inauspicious, the same effort may give less result, more struggle or repeated delays.

That is why, in Hindu culture, Shubh Muhurat is seen before:

  • Marriage (Vivah Muhurat)
  • Griha Pravesh (house warming)
  • Annaprashan (first feeding)
  • Namkaran (naming ceremony)
  • Mundan (first hair removal)
  • Starting business, signing big contracts
  • Buying house, land, gold, vehicle, etc.

A good muhurat does not replace hard work, but it aligns your effort with cosmic support, adding grace to the result and peace to the mind.

Role of Panchang in Shubh Muhurat 2026

Shubh Muhurat is always decided on the basis of Panchang, which contains five main elements:

  1. Tithi (Lunar day) – emotional & result‑oriented energy
  2. Vaar (Weekday) – planetary ruler of the day
  3. Nakshatra (Constellation) – mind and circumstances
  4. Yoga – combined effect of Sun and Moon
  5. Karana – half‑tithi, practical action energy

By studying these five together, an astrologer decides:

  • Which days and time slots are favourable for a particular activity
  • Which periods should be avoided due to Rahu Kaal, Yamagand, Gulika, Bhadra, Amavasya, or malefic combinations
  • How well a muhurat matches the birth chart of the native concerned

In many important cases (marriage, Griha Pravesh, first business opening), a personalised muhurat is chosen by matching transit planets with the individual horoscope.

List of Auspicious and Inauspicious Muhurat Names

Ancient texts describe 30 daily muhurats of about 48 minutes each across a 24‑hour day. Each muhurat has a name and a natural tendency:

Common Auspicious Muhurats (favourable)

  • Mitra – friendly, good for most auspicious works
  • Vasu – prosperity‑giving, good for wealth and stability
  • Varah – protective, good for home, land and family works
  • Vishvedeva – good for religious rituals and charity
  • Vidhi – auspicious (with some weekday exceptions)
  • Satmukhi / Sutamukhi – good for beginnings
  • Varun – good for spiritual and water‑related works
  • Aryama – auspicious except certain days, good for social rituals
  • Aahir‑Budhnya – supportive for firm foundations
  • Pushya, Ashwini – generally auspicious for many works
  • Vishnu, Brahma, Dyumadgadyuti, Samudram – very auspicious for major life events

Common Inauspicious Muhurats (to be avoided)

  • Rudra – linked with conflict, not good for happy occasions
  • Aahi (Ahi) – inauspicious, avoid new beginnings
  • Pitra / Pitrau – used for Pitru‑related works, not for celebration
  • Puruhut – not suitable for mangalik or joyous events
  • Vahini – avoid for major decisions and journeys
  • Naktanakara – unfavourable for auspicious samskaras
  • Bhag, Girish, Ajpada, Yam – generally avoided for marriage and ceremonies

A skilled astrologer checks which muhurats are active in your city on a specific date in 2026, and then selects the most suitable one.

Shubh Muhurat 2026: The Five Key Factors

1. Tithi (Lunar Date)

In each lunar month there are 30 Tithis, divided into:

  • Shukla Paksha (from New Moon to Full Moon)
  • Krishna Paksha (from Full Moon to New Moon)

Many Tithis are favourable for auspicious works, but some are best avoided:

  • Generally avoided for happy ceremonies:
    • Chaturthi (4th) – including many rigid Chaturthi days
    • Navami (9th)
    • Chaturdashi (14th)
    • Amavasya (New Moon) – not used for most Mangal works

Exact suitability also depends on the type of work (e.g., some Tithis good for business may not be good for marriage).

2. Vaar (Weekday)

Each day is ruled by a planet:

  • Sunday – Sun
  • Monday – Moon
  • Tuesday – Mars
  • Wednesday – Mercury
  • Thursday – Jupiter
  • Friday – Venus
  • Saturday – Saturn

In general:

  • Thursday, Wednesday, Friday – widely used for many auspicious works.
  • Tuesday – good for courage, land, surgery‑related decisions but often avoided for marriage or very delicate ceremonies.
  • Sunday & some Saturdays – used with care; many traditions avoid them for certain samskaras unless supported by strong Nakshatra and Yoga.

3. Nakshatra (Constellation)

There are 27 Nakshatras, each ruled by a planet and carrying a specific flavour. Many Nakshatras are particularly good for Shubh Muhurats, like Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Anuradha, Revati, Pushya, Uttarashada, etc., depending on the work.

Each Nakshatra is ruled by:

  • Ketu: Ashwini, Magha, Mula
  • Venus: Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purvashadha
  • Sun: Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttarashada
  • Moon: Rohini, Hasta, Shravana
  • Mars: Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishtha
  • Rahu: Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha
  • Jupiter: Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada
  • Saturn: Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada
  • Mercury: Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati

The right Nakshatra strengthens the purpose of your work and the role of the ruling planet.

4. Yoga

Yoga is formed by the combined longitudes of Sun and Moon. There are 27 Yogas. Broadly:

  • Auspicious Yogas: Harshan, Siddhi, Shubha, Saubhagya, Shobhana, Sukarma, Dhriti, Vriddhi, Dhruva, etc.
  • Inauspicious Yogas: Vishkumbha, Vyatipata, Vajra, Gand, Shoola, Atiganda, Vyaghata, Parigha, Vaidhriti, etc.

For Shubh Muhurat 2026, an astrologer will favour a day where Yoga is supportive and not one of the major inauspicious Yogas.

5. Karana

A Karana is half of a Tithi. Each Tithi has two Karanas. There are 11 Karanas in total:

  • Fixed (Sthira) Karanas:
    • Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, Kistughna – used for specific karmic and special works, not general celebrations.
  • Movable (Chara) Karanas:
    • Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Garaja (Gar), Vanija, Vishti (Bhadra)

In general, Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Garaja and Vanija are considered supportive for many auspicious works, whereas Vishti/Bhadra Karana is avoided for major ceremonies like marriage, Griha Pravesh, etc.

Things to Avoid Even in a Shubh Muhurat 2026

While selecting Shubh Muhurat in 2026, keep these points in mind:

  • Avoid “empty” or problematic Tithis like Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya for most happy samskaras.
  • Do not start auspicious works during Rahu Kaal, Yamagand, Gulika Kaal even if the day is otherwise good.
  • Avoid starting important tasks 3 days before and 3 days after a major planet (especially Venus, Jupiter, Mercury) becomes combust or rises.
  • If the sum of Tithi + Vaar + Nakshatra on a day forms certain inauspicious totals (like 13, depending on tradition), delay the work.
  • Avoid big financial transactions or speculative business deals on some combinations of Sunday, Tuesday, Saturday, if your astrologer advises so.
  • As a simple traditional rule:
    • Do not borrow money on Tuesday.
    • Do not lend money on Wednesday, to avoid imbalance.

Why Personalised Shubh Muhurat Matters in 2026

Public lists of “Auspicious Muhurats 2026” are useful, but they are general, not customised. For major life events like:

  • Marriage
  • First home or shop purchase
  • Griha Pravesh
  • Starting a lifelong business
  • Surgery or critical life decisions

it is always better to check:

  • Your birth chart (Janam Kundli)
  • Running Dasha / Antardasha
  • Transit of key planets touching your Lagna, Moon, 4th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th houses

A muhurat that is good in general but clashes badly with your horoscope may not give full benefit. A personally tuned muhurat uses both Panchang and your Kundli, giving much better chances of success, peace and health.
