Planets in Astrology

In astrology, a “graha” or planet, is a body that significantly influences living beings on Earth. While distant stars have minimal impact, the Sun, Moon, and planets within our solar system exert considerable influence on our activities. Thus, the term “graha” (or planet) is used to describe them.

There are seven planets in our solar system: Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. Additionally, two “chaayaa grahas” or shadow planets, Rahu and Ketu, are considered. In astronomical terms, Rahu and Ketu are referred to as “the north node” and “the south node,” respectively, or sometimes as the head and tail of the dragon. Please remember that Rahu and Ketu are not actual planets; they are mathematical points used in astrological calculations. You will never find mention of Earth in our astrological chart because Earth is depicted by Ascendant (Lagna). The Moon, which is a satellite of Earth, will be considered in astrological charts and calculations as the ninth planet. So, the nine planets for consideration in astrology are the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. Planets play a vital role in shaping human lives, according to astrology. While modern astronomy identifies nine primary planets in the solar system, Vedic astrology primarily focuses on seven major planets. Each celestial body in astrology holds unique significance, influencing various aspects of life.

Our Solar System and its Influence

Earth is part of the solar system, where the sun is the king, the creator. and all planets revolve around the sun under its gravitational force. The solar system is a gravitationally bound system comprising the Sun, planets, asteroids, and other celestial objects. Between Mars and Jupiter lies the asteroid belt, which, along with the planets, exerts an influence on Earth. These effects, whether positive or negative, highlight the interconnectedness of the universe.

Nodes of the Moon: Rahu and Ketu

In addition to the seven planets, Vedic astrology includes two lunar nodes:

  • Rahu (North Node): Representing the head of a demon, Rahu symbolizes worldly desires and materialism.
  • Ketu (South Node): Representing the tail, Ketu signifies spirituality, detachment, and enlightenment.
