Types of Lagna
Lagna
Lagna is the first house of a chart and is the most important in vedic astrology. Lagna is the rising Sun at the time of birth. Lagna is the self and true self. At the physical level it signifies physical body, complexion, appearance, head, intelligence, strength and energy. It represents the soul of a person and at the sub- conscious level it represents the journey of life, purpose of life. It also signifies name, fame, reputation and success in efforts. Though some scholars are of the view that representation of name, fame and happiness is at eternal level and these are represented by 7th house which is the view of society regarding a person. They are of the view that Lagna represent “I” Self which I believe. How the society view that person is that is indicated by 7th house which is reflection of self from the society view.
Moon lagna
In Vedic Astrology, Moon is considered the most important planet and all Dasha system, transits etc are read with reference to Moon. When we work out the Chart keeping Sign in which Moon is placed as Lagna and rest of planets as per sign in which they were place, it becomes moon chart. Moon is the state of mind and show things from the perspective of mind.
For example, someone may be working in a routine job, but he may have an active and enterprising mind and he may be using it in his career. In that case, the 10th house (career) from lagna may have the influence of Saturn (routine job) and the 10th house from Moon may have the influence of Mars (active and enterprising). Consider the fourth house from Lagna has Venus and person may have Audi car but if 4th house from Moon has Ketu then even that person is not happy with the Audi car hand has grief that he should have a better car. As another example, if the 7th house from Lagna has Venus, the person wife will be good looking but if the 7th house from Moon has Rahu or Ketu then that person may not consider the beauty of that wife and may not be happy from wife. Houses counted from Moon are useful in looking at things from the point of view of mind. When we judge how happy one is, how ambitious one is and how one views one’s career, the role of mind is paramount. So Moon (Chandra) lagna should not be ignored.
Ravi Lagna (Sun lagna)
Ravi lagna means Sun is taken as a reference as Lagna. The sign where Sun is placed in chart, becomes the first house and other planets in chart move accordingly. Sun is the significator of soul and in Sun Lagna things are seen from the perspective of soul. For things related to physical vitality also, Sun is an important reference.
Special Lagnas
There are various Special Lagnas such as Arudha Lagna, Hora Lagna, Pakka Lagna, Ghatika Lagna, Vighatika Lagna, Bhava Lagna, Varnada Lagna, Pranapada, , Upapada etc. are used in Vedic astrology for various other purposes which we will touch upon further and detailed studies of these have to be done from Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra and Gemini Sutras. Few of the astrologers use Shri Lagna and Indu Lagna for deciphering wealth and prosperity in a chart.
Arudha Lagna
Arudha lagna shows how a native is perceived in the world. It also shows the status of a native. A planet in the 10th house from lagna may give some important developments in one’s profession. A planet in the 10th house from Chandra lagna may give some important mental activity in one’s profession. A planet in the 10th house from arudha lagna may give some important developments in one’s professional status.
Hora Lagna
Hora lagna (HL) shows self, from the point of view of wealth. This reference is important when analyzing one’s wealth.
Paaka Lagna
Paaka lagna is important when analyzing the natal chart, dasas and transits. Paaka lagna is nothing but lagna lord taken as a reference. If someone with Pisces lagna has Jupiter in Cancer, then Cancer becomes paaka lagna. If someone with Leo lagna has Sun in Virgo, Virgo becomes paaka lagna. Rasis represent situations and forces influencing the course of a native’s life and planets represent individual beings. Lagna lord represents the physical self of a native. So that is what paaka lagna shows. Houses counted from paaka lagna throw light on matters related to the physical self of a native.
Karakamsa Lagna
Atma karaka stands for the soul of the person in Gemini Astrology. The planet with highest degrees becomes the Atma Karka. Atma karaka is an important reference point in a chart, because the soul is an important factor in deciding the nature of inner self than the physical existence.
The sign in D-9 chart (navamsha) where Atma karka is placed becomes the “Karkamsha”. We analyse the D-1 chart using Karkamsha as Lagna. Navamsa chart throws light on the inner self and the rasi occupied by atma karaka in it is called “Karakamsa”. We can analyze navamsa chart with respect to Karakamsa. The 12th house from Karakamsa shows the liberation of the soul and the situation of Ketu there is conducive to moksha. Propitiation of the deities corresponding to the strongest planet in the 12th house in navamsa from Karakamsa lagna can take one’s soul towards moksha. If a planet occupies, on a given day, a particular rasi, then it is said to “transit” in that sign on that day. Transit positions refer to the positions of planets on a given day and natal positions refer to the positions of planets at the time of one’s birth.
Ghati Lagna
Ghati lagna (GL) shows self, from the point of view of power, authority and fame. When we analyze promotions in career or political power of politicians, this reference is very important.
Graha Lagnas
Apart from the above references, we use several “graha lagnas” or planetary references. For each house, a planet works as the natural significator. To see matters signified by a house, we can take the relevant planet as the reference.
ASTRO GIVA
