He is also symbolised as Lord Muruga, Subramanya or Kumaraswami in South India.

In the Northern part of India, Mars’s deity is Lord Hanuman who was in service of Lord Rama and has been a warrior and had lifetime loyalty towards Lord Rama, once he accepted him. He took the initiative to volunteer himself to search for Goddess Sita. He was not aware of his capabilities and so he was reminded about them. He could jump and cross the ocean. He had the guts to challenge Ravana. He had an ego that created his seat higher than Ravana in his Court. He burnt the entire Lanka when he got displeased with Ravana. He went and brought the entire mountain for one Sanjeevani herb required to bring life back to Lakshman because he did not try to know about the plant before going on a mission. He dedicated his entire life to Ram. He had the stamina, dedication, strength, ego, anger, fire, quickness and initiative. All people with strong Mangal will have similar traits. Mars is a fiery planet and has been appointed as the commander-in-chief in the Solar System. It is an outer planet to Earth and can be considered to protect the Earth from external aggression as its Army. Consider a planet that does the patrolling around the earth to protect it from any aggression. Even Lord Hanuman was asked to sit outside the palace on the roof. All Martians have nature to protect the territory and people, which in general can be family and property. All Martians will have some injury marks on their face like Hanuman was given a hit by Lord Indra.

Mars is the desire to conquer (aggression) others to enhance its territory. Mars also has the capability to withstand any aggression (resistance). It is the capability to pursue his efforts (temper) in offensive or defensive. Temper can be understood from the example of how much time you can resist any pressure while in defence and how many attempts you will attack while on the offensive. If the temper is less, the person may surrender or stop making an effort in pursuing his goals, once he fails once. If the temper is high, the person will make several attempts to pursue his goals, despite failures.

In Palmistry, Mars has been specified as Upper Mars, Lower Mars and Middle Mars (plain of Mars). Mars is the fighting capability of any person. Upper Mars is the resistance to withstand any pressure and act. Lower Mars has the aggression and capability to attack. Middle Mars is the temper or duration for which a person can continue his offensive or sustain the pressure. But in astrology, we only consider Mars exalted, debilitated, malefic or benefic.
