Yamaganadam

Yamaganadam

As Rahu kaal is denoted by time ruled by Rahu, Yamagandam denotes the time in a day which is ruled by the planet Ketu. Yamagandam represents danger time that is considered unfavorable to start any auspicious activity. During Yamagandam only inauspicious ceremonies are performed. Any good activity performed in this timing is believed to destroy the end-result of the work. Hence, it is widely perceived that Yamagandam, in addition to Rahu Kaal is another inauspicious time window that appears on each day for approximately 90 minutes. This timing will change each day based on the timing of sunrise and sunset. All the planets have one week day assigned to them, while Rahu and Ketu do not own any day. Instead, they each rule a time window of one and half hours every day. Both Rahu Kaal and Yamagandam are considered inauspicious to commence any activity.

Yamagandam Timings

Yamghata or Yamagandam is considered in a predefined manner during set times on the different days of the week, but can vary as per the sun rise timing as well. Its instances vary from place to place. The timing of sunrise is marked in the panchang (almanac) and 12 hours of the day is divided into eight equal parts (say 06:00 a.m. IST to 6:00 p.m. IST). Yamagandam does not occur in the last part of the day and the rest of the seven parts are attributed to other different parts of the day.
