When buying a statue or picture of Lord Ganesha, always check the direction of his trunk. It is best to choose an image where the trunk turns to your right when you look at it. This means the trunk is turning to Ganesha’s own left side.
Such idols are called Vamamukhi Murtis. They are considered very lucky for homes because they bring positive energy, peace, and prosperity. In these idols, Ganesha’s lunar energy (chandra shakti) is active, which helps in spiritual and material growth.
There are two types of energies that come from Lord Ganesha:
- Lunar energy, from his left nostril, is soft, peaceful, and good for people.
- Solar energy, from his right nostril, is strong and powerful. This energy is too intense for regular households.
That is why idols with the trunk turning to Ganesha’s right (called Dakshinamukhi Murtis) are usually kept in temples, not in homes. In temples, special pujas and rituals are done regularly to handle this strong energy.
Also, the Dakshinamukhi idol is linked with Yamaloka (the direction of death) and can bring unwanted energies into a home if not properly worshipped.
Even though modern idols and pictures may not follow the strict rules of ancient Shilpa Shastra, it is still a good idea to follow the simple rule that Choose an idol where Ganesha’s trunk turns to his left (your right when facing the image). This helps keep the energy in your home peaceful and positive.
