Importance of Mahashivratri

Mahashivratri, “The Great Night of Shiva,” is the most significant event in India’s spiritual calendar.

The fourteenth day of every dark fortnight of the lunar month is known as Shivratri. Among all the twelve Shivratris that occur in a calendar year, Mahashivratri, the one that occurs in February-March is of the most spiritual significance. The northern hemisphere of the planet is positioned in a manner that leads to a natural surge in energy in humans on this night. This day is a time when the natural world is urging one to reach their spiritual zenith. A specific festival that lasts all night was established in this tradition to capitalize on this. One of the fundamentals of this nightlong festival is to maintain a vertical spine and remain awake throughout the night in order to enable this natural rise in energy to find its way.

Mahashivratri is very significant for people who are on the spiritual path. It is also of great importance to individuals who are in family situations and to those who are ambitious. Shiva’s wedding anniversary is commemorated by individuals who reside in familial environments during Mahashivratri. Those who harbor worldly ambitions regard that day as the day Shiva vanquished all of his adversaries.

On this day, devotees of Shiva worship him by offering Bael leaves to the Shivling, keeping fast, and staying awake the whole night.

Mahashivratri 2025 Fasting (Vrat) Rules

In order to observe Mahashivratri 2025 fasting, the following rules are mentioned in our scriptures:

   1.  If the entire Nishithkaal is coming under Chaturdashi Tithi (fourteenth day as per Hindu Panchang) on the very first day, Mahashivratri is celebrated on the same day. The eighth muhurat of the night is called Nishith Kaal. In other words, if the eighth Muhurat of night falls under Chaturdashi Tithi on the first day, Mahashivratri is celebrated on that day only.

   2. If, on the next day, Chaturdashi Tithi touches the first part of the Nishithkaal and on the first day the Nishithkaal is entirely coming under Chaturdashi Tithi, Mahashivratri is celebrated on the first day.

   3. Apart from the above-mentioned 2 conditions, the fast will always be observed on the next day.

Legend Behind Mahashivratri Vrat

As per one of the stories, Maa Parvati had to undertake a difficult penance in order to marry Shiva. According to mythological sources, on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight of Falgun, Maa Parvati and Lord Shiva were wed as a consequence of her diligent efforts. This explains why Mahashivratri is regarded as both auspicious and extremely significant.

As per the story in Garuda Purana, a hunter once went hunting with his dog but failed to find anything. He took a seat by a pond since he was hungry and exhausted. A Shiva Lingam was situated beneath a Bilva tree. He picked some of the leaves off that tree to let his body rest. Some of them accidentally fell over the Shiv Ling. Then he cleaned his feet by sprinkling them with pond water. The Shiv Lingam eventually received part of the water as well. One of his arrows dropped as he was accomplishing all of this. He bent down in front of the Shivalingam to pick it up. In this way, on the day of Shivaratri, he inadvertently finished the entire Shiva Puja procedure. When Yamadoot arrived to collect his soul after his death, members of Shiva’s army came to defend him.

If worshiping Shiva inadvertently on Mahashivratri 2025 produces such a wonderful outcome, imagine the blessings we would receive if we did it on purpose.

Vrat Puja Vidhi

   1. Fill an earthen pot with water or milk. Put some Bael leaves, flowers of Datura-Aak, rice, etc. in it and then offer it to Shiva Ling. If there is no Shiv temple around, then worship should be done by creating a Shivaling with mud at home.

   2. On this day, one should recite Shiv Purana and chant Mahamrityunjaya, or the 5-letter mantra of Shiva Om Namah Shivaya. Additionally, one should stay awake throughout the night of Mahashivratri.

   3. As per the classical rituals, the best time to perform Mahashivratri 2025 Pujan and Nishith Kaal is mentioned above. However, devotees can perform the Puja during all 4 prahars of the night as per their convenience.

Astrological Viewpoint

As per scriptures, Lord Shiva is the Lord of Chaturdashi Tithi, and that may be the reason that in every Lunar Hindu month, the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight is celebrated as Masik Shivratri (the monthly night of the Shiva).

This day is quite favorable, according to astrological traditions. According to the mathematical astrological calculations, Mahashivratri 2025 occurs when the Sun enters Uttarayana and the seasons shift. According to astrology, the moon becomes weaker on the fourteenth day. Because Lord Shiva created the moon over his forehead, honoring Him gives the worshipper’s moon more strength. The moon offers an extra advantage since it is the significator of thought. To put it another way, worshiping Shiva fortifies the will and makes the devotee tough and courageous beyond measure.
