Koorma Chakra

Koorma or Tortoise Chart Varahamihira In his monumental work has divided India according to direction represented by 27 nakshatras. This figure is similar to Toroise, Koorma, Koorma Avtaar, 2nd Avtaar of lord Vishnu in which he hold the Sumeru Mountain for Sagar Manthan, Churning of Ocean to take out nectar.

The division of country was made based on the figure similar to a tortoise. Under this scheme three nakshatras form a unit. Each unit represents certain parts of the country. The starting unit of this chakra is Central India. In ancient scheme of things, Krittika Nakshtra used to first Nakshtra. There after it proceeds to East, South East, South, South West, West, South-West, West, North- West, North, North-East.

Central Region: (ruled by three stars Krittika (3), Rohini (4), and Mrigsira (5))

These areas are roughly part of Rajasthan, Haryana, western UP including Mathura, Madhya Pradesh, Chattlsgarh and eastern part of Maharashtra, These also include parts of Punjab (Gurudaspur), Pathankot and Karnal in Haryana, Hastinapur, Kuru and Ayodhlya are located In it.

Eastern India- (ruled by Ardra (6), Punarvasu (7), Pushya (8))

These areas are roughly: Bihar, Jharkhand, Bangladesh, Meghalaya, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizorarn and Tripura.

South East- (Ashlesha(9), Magha( 10), Puravphalguni (II))

Roughly southern part of West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh Pondichery, lndudlng parts near Jabalpur.

South- (Uttarphalguni (12), Hasta (13), Chitra (14))

These places are roughly Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu, Konkan, Kerala, Part of Karnataka, Nasik and Kanchi.

South West- (Swati (15), Vishakha (16), Anuradha (17))

Roughly Goa, Karnatka, Part of South west Maharashtra, Pallava, Kambhoja, Slndhu-Sauveera.

West- Jyeshta ( 18), Moola (19), Purvasadha (20))

Modern – West Maharashtra, Travancore, Punjab (lndudlng West Punjab of Pakistan), Baluchistan.

North West- (Uttarashada (2I), Sravana (22), Dhanistha (23)

Roughly part of North Pakistan, Afghanistan, Northern part of Kashmir and part of Rajasthan (near Jodhpur). Also Upper Oxus Valley lnduding Balkh and Badakshan.

North – (Satabhisha (24), Poorvabhadra (25), Uttarbhadra (26))

Roughly Central Asia, North West India and Pakistan, Part of Kashmir, Some parts of Punjab, HaJYana, Uttar Anchal, part of northern UP.

North East- (Governed by Revati (27), Ashvini (I). Bharni (2))

Roughly parts of Kashmir, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Arunachal Pradesh, Tibet, China, Burma.
