Dussehra 2025

Vijayadashami/Dussehra Muhurat – New Delhi, India

  • Vijay Muhurat: 02 October 2025, Thursday, 14:09:05 to 14:56:34 (Duration: 47 minutes)
  • Aparahan Muhurat: 13:21:36 to 15:44:03

Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, is celebrated on the Dashami Tithi (10th day) of Shukla Paksha in Ashwin month. This is the day when Lord Rama defeated Ravana, symbolizing the victory of truth and goodness over evil. In many places, it is also known as Ayudh Puja or Aparajita Puja.

Rules for Dussehra Muhurat

  1. Dussehra is celebrated when Dashami Tithi falls during Aparahan Kaal.
  2. If Dashami runs for two days, the celebration depends on its presence during Aparahan Kaal.
    • If Dashami is in Aparahan on the first day, then the festival is on the first day.
    • If only on the second day → festival on the second day.
    • If on both days → festival on the first day.
  3. The influence of Shravan Nakshatra is also considered. If Shravan falls in Aparahan Kaal, it can shift the celebration day.

Aparajita Puja Vidhi

  • Choose a clean, sacred place in the northeast direction.
  • Draw an Ashtadal Chakra (eight-petalled lotus) with sandalwood paste.
  • Take a Sankalp (resolve) for family’s well-being.
  • Invoke:
    • Goddess Aparajita – “अपराजिताय नमः”
    • Goddess Jaya – “क्रियाशक्त्यै नमः”
    • Goddess Vijaya – “उमायै नमः”
  • Perform Shodashopchar Puja and prayers.
  • Conclude with Visarjan Mantra.

Other Dussehra Rituals

  • Vijaya Muhurat (sunset time) is highly auspicious for starting new ventures.
  • Worship of weapons (Ayudh Puja), Shami tree, books & ledgers, and Goddess Saraswati is done.
  • Ramlila concludes with burning effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnath.
  • In Bengal, Durga Visarjan marks the end of Durga Puja.
  • Reciting the Aparajita Stotra is considered very auspicious.

Legends of Dussehra

  • Lord Rama killed the 10-headed Ravana on this day. His 10 heads symbolize lust, anger, greed, delusion, intoxication, envy, selfishness, injustice, inhumanity, and ego.
  • Arjuna retrieved his bow Gandiva from a Shami tree to win the battle during Pandavas’ exile.
  • Shami tree is also believed to have blessed Lord Rama before his victory in Lanka.

Celebration

Dussehra is one of the most auspicious days of the year. From this day, preparations for Diwali begin. The grandest celebration can be witnessed at the Mysore Dasara Festival.

Happy Dussehra! May truth and goodness always prevail in your life.
